BMW is preparing to recreate its entire X family and the new-generation X5 is only part of the job. The BMW X5 was first launched in 1999, and 13 years later, it’s getting ready to enter its third generation to help keep up with the changing times. As no surprise the third generation X5 features an evolutionary design language, closely related to the model it replaces, but with some elements borrowed from the recently announced X3 and X1 models.

These updates will include a more prominent grille, an aerodynamic front bumper and optional LED adaptive headlights. The new X5 was also slightly increased in dimensions so it offers more interior room and a more accommodating boot. For the interior BMW also focused on improving the comfort level and added higher quality materials.

The new X5 will be put on sale on the U.S. market in the fourth quarter of this year. At launch it will be offered with three gasoline engines with a diesel one to follow in early 2014.

The BMW X5 is the German automaker’s three-row SUV, and was BMW ’s first sport utility back when the first-generation model was introduced for 2000. Now in its second generation, the X5 still offers a blend of luxury and practicality with a hint of BMW sportiness. The X5 is offered in all-wheel-drive configuration only, with four engines and many trim levels available.

We clocked an xDrive35i at 6.1 seconds from 0-60 mph, an impressive time considering the SUV’s 5000-plus-pound curb weight. The one to beat, however, is the X5 M with a mind-bogglingly fast time of 4.1 seconds. Driving dynamics were also a focus on the X5 M, as it receives electronic adaptive damper control and M-tuned all-wheel drive. Of that performance-biased vehicle, we said, “the ideally weighted helm, responsive chassis, and intuitive all-wheel drive programming [produce] an amazing sense of control and stability.”

All X5 models offer seating for five, though seven-passenger seating is available. The xDrive35i comes standard with faux-leather interior, satin silver matte trim, 10-way power adjustable front seats, and split folding rear seats.
