The Department of Engineering (later the College of Engineering) was established at the University of Texas in 1894. The Old Engineering Building (now the Dorothy Gebauer Building) was completed in 1904. Thomas Ulvan (T.U.) Taylor became the College’s first dean in 1906. Taylor’s flourished check mark for perfect papers became known as the “Ramshorn,” and was adopted as a symbol of quality within the college. Dean Taylor also established the Engineers Loan Fund in 1910. In 1915, the Division (later called the Bureau) of Engineering Research was created.

In 2007, the College of Engineering itself was renamed the Cockrell School of Engineering in honor of Ernest Cockrell, Jr. and his wife Virginia’s supportive endowment of faculty chairs and student scholarships.
